What to Do If You Have a Frozen Plumbing Pipe
By: Monika
With the relatively mild weather we’re experiencing in Wayland and neighboring communities, it’s hard to worry about pipes freezing and bursting. But old man winter has plenty of harsh weather in store. And if you don’t know what to do if you have a frozen pipe, you could find yourself with devastating damage and a costly mess on your hands.
If you’ve discovered a frozen pipe in your home, here’s what to do and steps you can take to prevent this from happening in the future.
- Turn Off the Water Supply
Immediately shut off the main water valve to prevent water from flowing through the frozen pipe. This will minimize the risk of flooding if the pipe bursts once thawed. - Locate the Frozen Pipe
Identify the section of the pipe that is frozen. Frozen pipes are commonly found in unheated areas like basements, attics, or exterior walls. You may notice frost or lack of water flow from the faucet connected to the pipe in question. - Thaw the Pipe Carefully and Slowly
Use a hair dryer, heating pad, or space heater to gently thaw the frozen pipe. Start from the faucet end of the pipe and work toward the frozen area. Avoid using open flames like a blowtorch, which can damage the pipe or cause a fire. - Check for Leaks
Once the pipe is thawed, inspect it for any cracks or signs of leaks. If you find any, call a licensed plumber immediately to avoid further damage.
How to Prevent Frozen Pipes
- Wrap exposed pipes in areas like basements, attics, and garages with foam pipe insulation to keep the pipes warmer and reduce the risk of freezing.
- Seal any gaps or cracks around windows, doors, and where pipes enter your home to prevent cold air from reaching vulnerable pipes.
- If you have pipes under sinks, open the cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around the pipes.
- Keep your thermostat set to at least 55°F (13°C) or higher, even when you’re away from home, to ensure your pipes stay warm.
- During particularly cold spells, leave faucets connected to vulnerable pipes slightly open to keep water moving through them.
