What Causes Low Water Pressure
By: Monika
When water flows from a faucet, showerhead, or outdoor faucet at just the right pressure level, you don’t do a fist pump. You don’t anything except go about your business. After all, water should flow through at the right pressure level – it’s just one of those things you take for granted.
But even water can play little games with your head and trip you up when you least expect it. Just like that, water from your kitchen faucet is flowing about as fast as a turtle creeping along your counter. Not fast at all.
Few Common Causes of Low Water Pressure:
Too Much Demand on Water:
When multiple fixtures are on at the same time, water can flow at a reduced rate. Try to space out your tasks a little to see if that helps.
Faulty Fixtures:
Shower heads and faucets can become faulty or clogged over time. In some cases, simply cleaning out the screen or aerator is enough to fix the issue. Sooner or later, though, fixtures need to be repaired or replaced.
Broken Pressure Regulator:
Water pressure regulators are designed to help stabilize water pressure in your home, keeping it within a certain range. When these regulators go bad, your water pressure can either become too high or too low.
Closed Valves:
Each water source in your home has (or should have) its own shut-off valve. If one gets accidentally shut entirely or even part of the way, you’ll see reduced pressure or perhaps no water at all. If your main water valve is shut off, then you won’t have water at all until it’s turned back on.
Corroded Plumbing:
Clogs can be fixed by cleaning out or replacing small sections of piping. Over time, though, your entire system of piping can become corroded, which can have a negative effect on your water pressure. Copper and lead pipes are particularly prone to corrosion. Plus, the process can accelerate if you have hard water.
