Pencils? Check. New outfits and sneakers? Double check. Everything else your child needs to start the school year with a bang? Checks all around.

But here’s one more item that never seems to make the list – can your water heater deliver enough hot water to get you through the school time morning “rush hour”? You know, when you’re all getting ready at roughly the same time.

Maybe you won’t know until the time comes, but here are some clear indications that your water heater might need to be repaired or replaced.

Water Heater Warning Signs

Lack of Hot Water

An insufficient supply of hot water often is caused by a build-up of mineral deposits inside the storage tank. Over time, these deposits form a barrier between water and the burner. Unless the problem is tended too, you’ll keep having colder showers. And eventually, the system will fail.

Popping or Rumbling Noises

A distinct popping noise is caused by air pockets within the tank’s mineral deposits. Once the air pockets build up enough heat, they start popping loudly enough so you can’t help but notice. What’s more, water heater noises are known precursors to storage tank leaks. Once it leaks, it needs to be replaced.

Cloudy Water

Murky and funky-smelling water are signs of a failing water heater. These symptoms occur when mineral-heavy water exits the tank and begins clogging faucets and plumbing connectors that also control water flow.

Leaking Tank Water

Is water pooling beneath your tank? Internal corrosion can lead to fractures and cracks, and there’s no way to fix them. Replacement becomes your only option.

Not every water heater warning sign is screaming “Replace me!” Maybe their message is a less worrisome “Get me fixed!”
