Prepping Your AC System for a Family Vacation
By: Monika
“Summertime and the living is easy” goes the classic tune. Nice theory, but one that doesn’t always work out in practice.
In fact, one could argue that in many ways, summer is the most hectic time. The kids are out of school – so much for taking it easy during the day. Yardwork to keep up with. Getting your kids to and from swimming and tennis lessons. Planning and keeping up with your garden. We could go on, but it’s not our goal to tire you out just thinking about all summer often entails.
But here’s one concern that needs to be stressed for any family that’s planning to be away on vacation. And that is: should you leave your AC system on or off, and why?
From our house to yours, here’s how to leave things for the better and come to zero problems:
Keep it Running
One way your system provides cool air is by removing indoor humidity. By shutting your system down, all that humidity will build up and stay indoors.
That, in turn, can trigger problems such as:
- Mold
- Musty smells and odors
- Peeling paint
- Warped wood furniture (floors, cabinets, etc.)
And then there’s the collateral damage that comes from shutting down your AC :
- Refrigerator problems from added stress
- Food spoilage in your pantry or cabinets
- Damage to sensitive electronics
Raise the Temperature on Your Thermostat
You don’t need your thermostat set at 68, 72, 75, or even 78 to solve the humidity and over-heating problem. A setting of 83-86 degrees should be enough, which means you’ll also save a good chunk of money on your electricity bill while you’re away.
For ultimate peace of mind, consider replacing your main thermostat with a programmable model that also includes a Wi-Fi accessible app. That way, you can keep track of your AC system’s performance during your vacation and contact a professional if it falters or shuts down.
