How often do you think about your heating system? If you’re like most homeowners, you probably don’t give it much thought – until it stops working. And then all you can think about is getting the heat going again as quickly as possible.

If your furnace or boiler has been providing you with years of warmth without issue, all you may need is a simple repair. But if it has been giving you more and more trouble in recent years or is getting up there in age, it may be time for replacement.

Here are a few telltale signs that signify it may be time to consider heating system replacement.

INCREASING ENERGY COSTS

During the colder months of the year, it’s not uncommon for you to notice an increase in utility bills. But if your heating bill seems to be getting higher each month without an icrease in energy consumption, your heating system may be to blame. If your furnace or boiler is losing performance in efficiency, it will show up on your heating bill.

MORE FREQUENT REPAIRS

If your furnace or boiler has been repaired more than once in the last two years, or if repairs are getting more costly, you may want to consider replacement before an inevitable breakdown. A good rule of thumb is if recent or quoted repair bills add up to about half (or more) of the cost of a new system, it’s time for a heating system
replacement.

YELLOW PILOT LIGHT

When a heating system is in proper working order, its burner flame should be blue. A yellow or orange flame often means it’s not burning as hot and the thermocouple will not heat up enough, causing the gas supply to shut off. It could also indicate a lack of oxygen or that carbon monoxide is present in the furnace. Have a licensed heating professional inspect the system to be on the safe side.Unusual Noises

If your furnace or boiler is making odd noises, it could be a sign of more serious trouble. Keep an ear out for popping, screeching, humming, clanking, or banging and contact your HVAC company to get to the bottom of those unusual sounds.

VISUAL CORROSION

Today’s heating equipment is made to resist corrosion for years, but if a furnace or boiler has broken valves and leaks, air will gain access to the system and lead to deterioration. If your unit shows signs of corrosion, it’s usually best to get it replaced.

AGE OF THE SYSTEM

Furnaces and boilers, on average, have a lifespan of 10 to 15 years. While regular maintenance can add years to the expected life of a system, it may make more sense to replace an older unit especially if it’s experiencing more frequent repair issues. After a furnace or boiler reaches a certain age, no amount of money can make it operate as
effectively and efficiently as it once did.
