How to Reduce Your Home Heating Bills
By: Monika
Once the autumn chill arrives, “you know what” is right around the corner. That means the kind of inconvenience only a blizzard can cause, bone-rattling cold, plus days so short you almost forget what the sun looks like.
And while you’re relieved your electricity bills are lower with the fading of the air conditioning season, you’re in a mild panic over what it might cost to heat your home.
What’s a homeowner to do? For starters, be proactive about keeping those costs in check. Here a just a few ways how:
Let the Sun In
One of the easiest ways cut heating bills is to pull back the drapes and raise the blinds when the sun is out, especially on south-facing windows. Once the sun goes down, pull the drapes closed to keep all that warm air in.
Keep Drafts Out
Keep drafts out and warm air in with inexpensive and easy-to-use draft guards. Or if you’re feeling crafty, you can make your own with some foam pipe insulation, double sided tape or iron-on Velcro, and a bit of fabric. Draft guards also help prevent cool air from escaping during the summer.
Test for Air Leaks
Air can leak from multiple locations like windows, doors, electrical outlets, and areas where plumbing pipes enter the house. To test for possible air leaks, move a piece of toilet paper around the edges of doors and windows. If the toilet paper moves, you have a gap that needs to be sealed or insulated.
Run Your Ceiling Fans in Reverse
By running your ceiling fans clockwise, they’ll push warm back down into your living spaces, thus allowing you to lower the thermostat a degree or two without any loss of comfort.
