There’s nothing quite like curling up in front of a warm, crackling fire. But what good is that unless you’re as sure as you can be that your fireplace is safe to operate?

So, before you fully engage in one of your favorite fall and winter activities, take the following precautions to help ensure the safety of your home and family.

Your Fireplace for Winter

Schedule an Annual Inspection

You should have your chimney inspected and cleaned at least once a year, or after about 80 fires to remove any creosote build-up.

Inspect for Damage

Check the exterior for damage and inspect inside the fireplace for loose joints and cracks. Hire a professional mason for needed repairs.

Trim Tree Limbs

While conducting an exterior inspection, trim back any overhanging tree limbs that could restrict proper chimney draft, damage the cap, or otherwise present a fire hazard.

Check Chimney Cap and Damper

Make sure the chimney cap is firmly attached and that protective screening is in place to keep squirrels, birds, bats, and other unwanted guests out. Check that the damper is free of debris and able to open and close properly.

Clean Out the Firebox

Clean out ashes once a week or whenever they are over an inch deep. Make sure everything is completely cold before sweeping or vacuuming and disposing of ashes.

Add Heat-Proof Glass

Heat-proof glass doors can improve the energy efficiency of your fireplace and prevent sparks from escaping and causing serious damage. If you already have glass doors, clean them regularly with a glass fireplace door cleaner.

Keep Brass Fireplace Clean

Clean a brass surround with a good quality brass polish and soft cloth.

Store Firewood Properly

Store good quality firewood on an elevated platform away from your home to avoid attracting pests. Opt for hardwoods like maple, oak, and birch which burn longer and hotter than softwoods.

Inspect Your Electric Fireplace

Check that all connectors are securely fastened and that no wires are frayed or damaged. Vacuum and dust the fireplace regularly.

Inspect Your Gas Fireplace

If you have a gas fireplace, check the burners, liners, and logs for damage and replace as needed. Also, make sure the pilot light is on and vents are clear of debris.
