How to Practice Halloween Safety
By: Monika
Halloween is just around the corner and this year it will look a lot different than before. Many are choosing not to participate, while others are planning to take extra measures to ensure everyone’s health and safety while enjoying the festivities. If you fall into the latter group,
Here are some tips for making this Halloween as fun, festive, and safe as possible.
- If you choose to hand out candy, offer only individually packaged varieties. This not only protects the treat but allows trick-or-treaters and their caregivers to weed out those that might trigger a food allergy or sensitivity.
- Keep the exterior of your home well lit, including the driveway and pathway up to your front door. However, if you are not handing out candy, turn off your front door light.
- If the kids are hitting the streets in search of treats, remind them to stay with a buddy and walk only on well-lit sidewalks and driveways. For an added measure of safety, make sure each child has a flashlight to help guide the way.
- Illuminate carved pumpkins with LED tealights instead of real candles should a trick-or-treater or other visitor accidentally knock one over.
- Eager trick-or-treaters often cut across lawns as they make their way from house to house, so make sure yours is free of branches, lawn tools, outdoor toys, or anything else that could pose a trip hazard.
- If you’re hosting a Halloween gathering, serve alcoholic beverages responsibly. And be sure to have plenty of alcohol-free options for guests who will be driving home.
- Want other ways to make this Halloween fun and memorable? Set up a scavenger candy hunt in your home, find a drive-through event where you can enjoy Halloween displays from the comfort and safety of your car, or fill a pinata with individually wrapped candy and let your kids take turns hitting it with a broom handle until it cracks open.
- Review your homeowner’s insurance policy to make sure you’re covered against accidental falls on your property. The worst time to discover you have too little coverage is after something goes wrong!
