How to Obtain More Closet Space
By: Monika
You open a closet door and an avalanche of clothing, bags, and accessories comes tumbling down on you. Sound familiar? Sure, one could argue you simply have too much stuff. But perhaps the real problem is that you’re not utilizing the space to its full potential. Even the smallest of closets probably have more space than you realize.
Here are 9 ways to maximize every square inch of any closet.
- Pare Down – When was the last time you took inventory of the items shoved into the deep, dark recesses of your closet? Donate items that are out of fashion, uncomfortable, or no longer fit. That alone should give you a little breathing room.
- Pack it Away – Save loads of space by packing up summer gear once temps dip into fall, and vice versa. Seal off-season clothing into vacuum storage bags or slip them into underbed storage boxes.
- Use Shelf Dividers – Instead of hanging up sweaters (which stretches out the shoulders and takes up too much space), fold them neatly and stack them on your closet shelf, separated by shelf dividers so they won’t tumble over in a heap. That will provide you with more vertical space.
- Install Two Rods – Unless you mostly wear long dresses, skirts, and other items, you can instantly double your space by hanging up two rods instead of one.
- Use the Back Door – If your closet has a swinging door, put it to use! Add a hanging organizer to hold scarves, shoes, accessories, and more.
- Use Vertical Space – Add a shelf directly above the clothes rod if you don’t have one to store infrequently worn items in labeled boxes or storage containers (or stack sweaters as mentioned above).
- Clean Up the Floor – Tidy up the floor of your closet with a shoe organizer to neatly pair up your shoes. Add a small laundry basket for dirty items and perhaps one for items you need to take to the dry cleaners.
- Add Organizers – Hang a cubby organizer to store hard-to-hang items like purses, hats, and folded knits.
- Add Lighting – It’s much easier to find things when you can see them. Consider installing a motion-sensor LED light (or two) that switches on when you open the door.
