How to Conserve Water at Home
By: Monika
Here’s one thing that’s always true about water conservation: it’s a great habit to develop. Here’s one more thing you can say about it: there’s always Plumbing Drains more we can do.
Now that we’ve said a mouthful (pun intended), let’s look at a few water-saving Plumbing Drains tips worth making part of your daily life:
- Take shorter showers. Long, hot showers are one of life’s true guilty pleasures, but for every such pleasure, there’s usually a price to be paid. In this case, the “price” is wasted water and energy.
- Install water efficient fixtures, like a low-flow showerhead and aerated faucets. A low-flow showerhead can cut water usage by up to 50%.
- Washing dark clothes in cold water saves both water and energy, and helps your clothes retain their color.
- Don’t use your toilet as a wastebasket. Ask your children and guests to abide by the same rule.
- Prevent pipes from cracking and bursting. This goes for all pipes in your garage and other unheated spaces. By properly insulating them, you’ll do more than protect your pipes. You’ll prevent a potentially massive amount of spilled water.
- Harvest your excess water. Put a large bucket under the shower while the water warms up, and later use that water for your plants, household cleaning and other productive purposes.
- Fix those leaky faucets. Even a slow drip can waste more than 5 gallons of water per day and 2,000+ gallons per year.
- Use your dishwasher and washing machine only to run full loads. Or, if that’s not practical, change the settings to suit the load.
- Turn off the water while you shave and brush your teeth. There’s simply no reason to run the faucet from beginning to end of either process.
