When you want water, whether for rinsing vegetables, watering your plants, or simply enjoying a refreshing beverage, you turn on the tap and let it flow. What’s there to think about, right?

Well for about 2 billion people around the world, it’s not that simple. They don’t have access to clean drinking water, something the rest of us take for granted. And while it may seem like one person can do very little to solve such an overwhelming problem, when those actions are multiplied by the millions, deprivation begins to disappear.

Here are some practical ways to enhance your water-saving habits, starting today!

Get informed. Seek out information and educate yourself about water conservation.

Know your consumption. Do you know how much water your household consumes daily? The more you know, the easier it becomes to find areas where excess is the rule, not the exception.

Conserve More Water

Repair water leaks. Inspect pipes and water-using appliances for leaks and repair them right away.

Upgrade fixtures. A low-flow shower head uses about 2.5 gallons of water per minute, whereas a standard showerhead uses about twice that amount.

Collect water. If your town permits, invest in a rain barrel to catch rainwater from your gutters and use it to water flower beds and vegetable gardens.

Shorten shower time. Just shaving a couple minutes off your shower time can save gallons of water. While you’re at it, turn the faucet off when brushing your teeth or shaving to prevent wasting clean water down the drain.

Wash full loads only. Whether it’s the dishwasher or washing machine, make sure they are full before running them.

Wash on cold settings. Washing your clothes in cold water not only preserves fabric quality but allows you to wash more types and colors together, cutting down on the number of loads. This saves water and electricity – a win-win.

Change your diet. Choosing more local, organic produce, less red meat, and fewer processed foods reduces dependence on water-intensive livestock and crops.
