The coronavirus pandemic has altered many aspects of our lives, including how we work, learn, connect with family and friends, and even how we use the spaces inside our homes. In fact, some of the most popular home design trends we’re seeing today have been a direct result of the pandemic. And we’re willing to bet they’ll be around for a good long while.

Here are a few ways homeowners are re-inventing their living spaces for a whole new spin on comfort and efficiency.

Home Improvements Influenced by the Pandemic

Pause on Downsizing

As remote learning, working from home, and social distancing haves spread, so has the need for extra space and privacy. Over the years, the “less is more” trend grew increasingly popular, but now that families are spending more time indoors, they’re moving forward with their plans to finish their basements, attics, and porches for the extra space they need.

Open Floor Plans

While open floor plans are still popular, the need for privacy, noise control, and dedicated spaces has caused some buyers and homeowners to rethink the concept. Some have resolved the issue by adding doors to once open rooms and converting unused rooms to home offices.

Outdoor Spaces

With many dining, sports, entertainment, and gathering places being forced to reduce occupancy or close entirely, it only makes sense that many homeowners turned to their backyards to fill the void. Design, remodeling, and construction firms have reported increased demand for screened-in porches, patios, decks, and swimming pools.

Kitchen Storage

Kitchens have always worked overtime, but even more so as families have been forced to prepare more of their meals at home. Along the way, smarter storage solutions are being sought and implemented.

Exercise Spaces

It is reported that fitness equipment sales have grown by 170 percent during the pandemic; a direct result of gyms closing or operating at limited capacity. And, according to Beachbody, a California-based health and fitness company, 8 out of 10 people who exercise regularly say they will continue to do so at home.

Gardening

If you decided to grow a green thumb this year, you’re not alone. More people have turned to gardening in 2020 not just for the bounty of fresh food, but for a way to spend extra time at home relaxing and unwinding.

Energy Efficiency

With more time spent at home and greater demand for electricity, heating, and cooling, it’s no surprise people continue to look for ways to make their homes more energy efficient. HVAC inspections and tune-ups and upgrades, added insulation, and sealing cracks and gaps around exterior windows and doors are excellent ways to do just that.
