Clogged Drain Prevention Tips
By: Monika
A household drain has but one purpose: to move water, food particles, and other matter from point A to point B.
But when water and all the rest starts returning to point A, or bursting through an underground pipe to points C, D, E and beyond, you’ve got a problem on your hands – one that can be downright catastrophic!
So, how can you prevent clogs in the first place? For starters:
- Don’t pour FOG (fat, oil, or grease) down your drain.
- Don’t put stringy or fibrous foods in your garbage disposal. This list includes onion skins and most other veggies.
- Don’t use your toilet bowl as a trash can…toilet paper and “you know what” only, for your own sake!
- Don’t use hot water while using your garbage disposal. A cold water rinse does a better job of flushing oils or grease through your drain line.
- Don’t put large amounts of food in your garbage disposal at the same time.
And now for a few important “do’s”, just to help balance the equation:
- Do keep your garbage disposal clean. A mixture of one cup baking soda followed by one cup distilled white vinegar – with a tea kettle full of boiling hot water as a chaser – can work wonders.
- Do run your garbage disposal regularly. Frequent use prevents rust and corrosion, assures that all parts stay moving and prevents obstructions from accumulating.
- Do grind certain hard materials such as small chicken and fish bones, egg shells, small fruit pits, etc. A scouring action is created by these particles inside the grind chamber that cleans the garbage disposal’s walls.
- Do periodically use an organic drain cleaner to help keep your drains running smooth and clean.
Of course, even if you’re the best in the Boston metro area at drain care and maintenance, sooner or later you’re bound to run into a clogged drain or sewer problem. Things just happen, you know?
